I did a 30 day trial on Ancestry and couldn't believe how much information I found once I started looking. It helped that my Great Grandfather was involved in the NYC government at the time. Someone else told me about the Latter Day Saints site and that really helped me. I actually found it helpful to make a flow chart on scrap paper and double check people and their relations using both sites. I also got stuck once and through one of my connections there was a very distant family member who had traced that line back to the 1500's. I wrote them an email through ancestry and it turned out she was in Germany and actually was able to help me find out that the relative of mine that I was looking for must have dropped their first name when they came here and that was why I couldn't find them. Through her I found out that my other Great Grandfather had 9 children but only came to the US with three. I invested in the world ancestry site for a year but I didn't think it was worth it.

We recently decided to do genealogy research for my husband's side of the family. I did join Ancestry.com but I got the most help from the Latter Day Saints Family History Center. The woman who helped me was so helpful and we found out quite a bit on my first visit. Unfortunately, the Center closed down for the holidays but I will go back on Wednesday and start searching again. My brother also has had great success going to his local LDS Family History Center.

If anyone else is interested in doing their family's genealogy, I highly recommend the LDS Family History Center--there is no charge for using this service. You have access to censuses, microfilm, and microfiche records all provided by the Center.

Hello all,
I wanted to share about a free site called "geni.com". Believe it or not posted on this site were old family photos I thought only my Grandmother had. But a very distant cousin actually had more pictures than we did! Truly I was amazed. Not to mention feeling like I just won the lotto! I found this geni.com site simply by googling my Grandmother's aunts name. Ancestry.com is great site however don't look over other sites just because Ancestry.com is the largest. Thanks for letting me share. Best wishes on your ancestor quests! It's SO much fun and quite addicting too!

I just joined ancestry.com yesterday. I only spent about 8 hours at the computer. It truly is amazing to look at all those old records and see someone's name that you know!.

I am in need of advice in tracking down my grandmother who was placed in an orphanage in about 1903. I have some records about her, but cannot locate a name for her mother. She was 4 yrs+/- when entered the orphanage, due to the death of the mother.
Thanks in advance,
candyK
