Digital Page Sizes PDF Print

There are as many ways to create a digital scrapbook page as there are scrapbookers, I think. But as far as page sizes go, I think these are the most common, and I would love to hear your thoughts:

  • 12x12 inches, 300 pixel/inch (12-inch square)
  • 8.5 x 11 inches, 300 pixel/inch (letter-size)
  • 24x12 inches, 300 pixel/inch (2-page 12x12 spread)
  • 8x8 inches, 300 pixel/inch (8-inch square)
  •  12x8 inches, 300 pixel/inch (4x3 aspect ratio - the size of most digital photo frames)
Which of these sizes do you create most often, and why? Do you create at one size and print at another?

For me, I create pages almost exclusively at 12x12, but I've been hearing lots of requests for letter-sized templates.

I have been doing 12x12 or 8x8, but I could see where there would be times that I would like to do 8.5x11.

Jessica, How are you doing? I'm doing great. Preparing for a photo shoot when Zoe gets home from school. I'm take the portraiture class with Candice Stringham. I design all of the sizes except 8.5x11. One size I design alot is a 6x12 or 12x6 which is called a half map. I also so have a 6x12 album. Monica

I create at 12x12 90% of the time. I love creating at 12x12 b/c if I want it 12x12 it's already completed that way but if I want to shrink it, that can easily be done. For my own albums, I usually print them at 12x12 but for gifts & "proofing" I shrink these down to 8x8 so that I can print them at home. Sometimes I create at 8x8 if it's only a gift - I don't want to take up the extra hard drive space for something I will not be printing at 12x12.

Since Scrapbook Alchemy (thanks Jessica!!), I have been doing more 8.5x11 to use in a 12x12 hybrid albums. I love this & have done many layouts in a short time with this method. Sometimes I cut them up to use in strips or blocks but I have also done 8.5x11 "page" and placed it on a 12x12 a half inch from one side, top, & bottom and use the remaining space to the side for journaling & embellishments. Love this! I do create digital Storybooks (8.5 x 11 landscape) in this size - it's less expensive than 12x12 but I think has a nicer presentation than an 8x8 for vacation Storybooks. smilies/smiley.gif

I scrap 12 X 12 for printing 12 x 12, 8 x 8 and 6 x 6. It's just easier to reduce than to increase.
I also scrap 8 1/2 X 11. My family's latest vacation is an 8 1/2 X 11 album.

Most of the time, I create at 12x12 -- and if it's a two page layout, I create at 24x12.

If I'm making an 8x8 theme album or other specific projects in a specific size, and I know it won't ever be printed larger, I create at 8x8 or 4x4, etc. For example, I make ABC albums for my grandchildren, and the original, that I keep using over and over but adding photos appropriate to that child, was created at 8x8. Then I print it on double-sided Epson matte paper when I'm done.

I started scrapping in January of 1998 in 8.5x11, but once I changed to 12x12 I've never gone back.

Hi Jessica - great question! I do mainly 12x12 b/c it's so easy to shrink to 8x8 or even 6x6. But - I do occasionally use 8.5x11 - both for others and I'll use those-sized templates on a 12x12 page sometimes for interesting effects, etc. Looking forward to seeing everyone's comments! Take care, Meg

I use mostly 12 x 12 and then print at whatever square size I'm using. I've even done 3x3 prints, they are just so cute. Occasionally I do lettersized both portrain and landscape.

Great question Jessica! I personally do exclusively 12x12 and 8x8 for albums. I use the 12x12 for my yearly albums, and use the 8x8 for special topic albums like a vacation or giftbook for someone. I just like the sizes. I also do larger poster sizes, but that size is dependent on where and how I print. (Paper or Canvas). I do know a lot of people who use the 5x7 size also, but mostly as a gift book (like Valentines Day, Farther's day etc.)

I almost always create 12X12. Most digital supplies are scaled to that size so its easier to put together. Then I can print any square size. I usually print 12X12 or 8X8.

I generally work in 12x12 - and prefer double paged spreads. Having said that, the world of digi 8.5x11 then applied in a hybrid fashion onto 12x12 patterned paper is very intriquing. I like the blend of both worlds.

I create in 12x12, but want to make a recipe book for a gift and it needs to be smaller. I think I will go 8x8, but have never printed in that size so am not sure it will work well for lots of text.

Good discussion.....
~For the most part I design in 12x12 and print in either 12x12 or 8x8, depending on the nature of the project.
~I like using the 8.5x11 photo grids to create 12x12 hybrid pages. I would be interested in more 8.5x11 templates...they really do make a good foundation piece for hybrid pages.
~Recently I created some 6x12 layouts and used them as half page inserts in a 12x12 album project. American Crafts makes 3-ring binder page protectors for the 6x12 pages.
Enjoy the day!

I do mostly 12 x 12 or 8 x 8 size pages since I am often printing these in hardbound photobooks rather than printing myself. I did just recently make a special album of my dance team stuff and there I was printing myself and I ended up with a combination of 8.5 x 11 and 8x8 sizes. I loved how they did really work together in the album.

My regular paper pages and my digital pages are always 12x12. I print digital at 12x12 also. I guess I just love the size. I am not against smaller pages in my albums but I just am not drawn to them. I love squares. The exception is my mini albums, but they are also always square (5x5 or 6x6 or 8xsmilies/cool.gif, and usually all paper. (The size list made me think how a 2-page spread for 8 1/2 x 11 is 17 x 11, which I don't think you mentioned and I wonder if many also do that?)

I create 12 x 12 so I can shrink them to 8 x 8 and print at home but I rarely do. I love making odd sized chipboard albums and then bind them. I'm looking around the loft and can see eight different albums and no two are the same size.

I almost always print 12 x 12's and 8 x 8's. I don't have any desire or need for the 8.5 x 11 size. Occasionally, I print 6 x 6 for the smaller gift albums. I print all my scrapbook pages myself at home but I also have done quite a few hard-bound photo books through Shutterfly and Apple.

I make most of my pages 12x12 and then print the size I want. I like 6x6 for my Grand kids and can down size any 12x12 and get four on a 12x12 page for printing. Scrapbooksplease.com have specials which I usually wait for to do my printing. For myself I like 8x8, but my daughter wants 12x12. I sometimes do 4x6 (which I print myself) or ATCs which I then use on my 12x12 pages. Haven't really thought about using 8.5x11 though. Will have to give that a try.

I really like to mix up my digital page sizes. While I usually design at 12 x 12, I generally print 8x8 because I like that size. (It fills well in hands, both large and small, and encourages people to pick up your albums and view them!) Same with 6x6. I also like 8-1/2 x 11 and have even done a 5x7. One size I haven't tried - but love - is the 6x12. One thing that really encourages me to try different sizes is when I find interesting templates in other than 12x12 sizes - too cool!

I started scrapbooking 1 year back with 12x12 layouts and 3 months back, I switched to digi.I scrapbook 8.5x11 now and I am loving it! I can easily get the refills and cool looking binders from target, that too for such a low price! And the best part is, I can print out the images as soon as I finish a page on my letter-sized HP printer.

One more thing...
I made an 11.8x5 landscape Shutterfly album for my husband's peacock bass fishing trip in Brazil. I used 8x8 templates and put them on an 11x8.5 page using Wendyzine's actions. That allowed me to do the journaling to the side of the 8x8 portion and it turned out beautifully. I think I may do the same thing for my Carribbean cruise. That size allows a square opening in the front leather cover which will show part of the title page through. So, it's perfect for a picture of the ship we were on.

I create at 12x12 300 dpi.

But I do find it a little annoying to create a Shutterfly book, the size has to be 9.75" with room for a bleeding edge, and margins for page binding. I always have to modify digital templates I purchase to fit Shutterfly's standards in order to have it bound in a book.

Hi Jessica. I seem to be a "drive by" scrapper as fitting it all in is a challenge in my busy life. I just got around to reading the posts that I missed. I hope my input will still count. I started scrapping digitally a couple of years ago-actually almost 10 years ago by myself but discovered the internet world of digi a couple of years ago. Ten years ago I picked 8.5 x 11 because that was the printer size. When I found the digi world I started scrapping in the traditional paper size of 12 x 12 and printing 8 x8. Last year I started a family blog and realized that 12 x 12 doesn't really make sense to me. Our computer screens are "widescreen" and the squares don't maximize the space. Now I've gone back to 8.5 x 11 to try to get the best of the computer screen world and the paper world. I truly respect everyone's choices as far as what size they prefer but I do wish the digi world would embrace 8.5 x 11 more as a consumer choice. Most of the time I'll crop or adapt a square template and with your great awesome DID class I learned so much that it is much easier for me make templates for myself. Thanks so much for asking!
