Question on clipping masks 16 Years, 11 Months ago
I have looked so forward to sitting down and learning photoshop (cs)and how to digi and hybrid scrap as well as work with my digi photos. I finally got a few days off this week and man o man have I been busy at this computer.

I have created the cutest layout using the instructions in your book. Now I want to create a "three layer" clipping mask. I figured out how to use two layers...like the photo and the mask. I have a photo on pink digi paper. I want the clipping mask to show white all around the photo. I did get that to work my merging a blank white layer with the clipping mask. The thing I don't like is the photo still has hard edges. I tried to do two of the same masks using one with the photo and one with the white layer and that didn't work. I hope I am explaining this in a way you can understand.

Thanks anyone for any help you have to offer.
I was up til 4am playing with this stuff. I think I am in love!!

Hi Maureen... I am not Jessica but maybe I can help?

Can you please explain a little more about the look you are after. If you are trying to get a drop shadow around your photo it won't work if you merged down with the white layer. I am not sure what you mean by hard edge?

Hi Kim...Thanks for replying to my question.

I guess it is a bit hard to explain. I will try it in steps.
1. I have a background paper that is bright pink.
2. I have a scrolly edge frame mask. I want it to appear white around my photo.
3. I have a photo I want on top of the white scrolly mask.
4. I want that photo to have a soft blendy edge that flows into the scrolly mask.

Do I have to add a different mask to the photo to make the photo edges blend? Or maybe it is the size of the photo vs. the size of the white background? I have tried all sorts of things and can't seem to get the look I want.
Any ideas?
Thanks so much.

Maureen..

click on the thumbnail and it will bring up a bigger image. This is Jessica's grunge mask. Your mask should look the same in the layers palette.

As for the fade on the edges?

You can Ctrl click on the thumbnail in your layer pallette with your image to get a selection. And do a huge feather. Then hit Ctrl J to put your new selection on it's own layr. (make sure you hide the one below it)Or you can try adding a gradient and using a clipping group.

Do you have an example of what you are trying to do that you could post on Pixentral?

Post edited by: kimi_boo, at: 2007/05/27 01:58

Hi Jessica...
Well yes and no. I had a really hard time explaining the look I wanted. After much experimenting I finally figured a way to do it. Tell me if you know a better way. I started a new document. I added my picture to it. Then I put a grunge mask on it and then flattened it with white behind it. Next I added a scrolly type mask behind the new version of the picture. That way I got the "messy" look around the photo with the scrolly frame around it. It took me hours to come up with it but it worked.
Thanks for asking Jessica.

Hi Maureen....

Can you post a your image so I can see the look you were trying for?

You can use save for web. keep your biggest size around 700 and upload your image here..... www.pixentral.com/index.php.

I would love to see what you came up with.
