Illustrator pathfinder problem 9 Years, 2 Months ago

I don't use Illustrator a lot so I ran into a problem which I can't solve on my own, even after re-watching all classes. I desperately hope someone can help me please.

I create a poster for the choir I'm in. When saving as .png it included all extra's so I trimmed those parts but.... when I want to trim the lines properly, they disappear!
Does anyone know how to do this correctly?
When I gave the lines an extra anchor point and deleted the outer part, it didn't look the way I want it to be (see detail).
